(A) GABBY GIFFORDS WON’T BACK DOWN Harrowing, sad and inspiring in equal measures, this documentary chronicles the former Arizona congresswoman’s recovery after being shot in the head during a 2011 assassination attempt and her work as an activist against gun violence. In English, Mandarin and Cantonese, with subtitles. R (for language, some violence and sexual material). It’s a preposterous and tasteless ode to the messy, nonsensical struggle and bliss of being human. (A-) EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE In this madcap sci-fi adventure comedy, a Chinese immigrant (Michelle Yeoh) struggles with an IRS tax audit while being pulled into a violent multiverse clash. PG-13 (for substance abuse, strong language, suggestive material and smoking). At the center of the film, Austin Butler delivers a fully transformed, star-making turn as Presley. (A-) ELVIS In this sprawling pop epic, director Baz Luhrmann takes Elvis Presley’s legacy, relegated to a Las Vegas gag, and reminds us just how dangerous, sexy and downright revolutionary the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was. PG-13 (for intense sequences of violence and action, frightening images and some language). Olsen is so emotionally dominant that Strange - whose mission is simply to prevent Wanda from succeeding - sometimes feels less like a hero than a villain’s foil, which is honestly all to the good. (B) DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) opens a doorway to alternate realities of the multiverse, which his grieving friend Wanda Maximoff (a spectacular Elizabeth Olsen) is determined to conquer. R (for violence, bloody images, language and some drug use). It also has one of the most satisfying endings of a horror-thriller in recent years. COMING SOON TO THEATERS SERIAL(B) THE BLACK PHONE After being abducted by a serial killer (Ethan Hawke) and locked in a basement, a 13-year-old boy (played by newcomer Mason Thames of McKinney) starts receiving calls on a disconnected phone from the spirits of the killer’s previous victims. Also starring Issa Rae, Ashton Kutcher, Dove Cameron and Boyd Holbrook. Novak wrote, directed and stars in this horror-thriller about a New York City radio host who heads down South to find answers about his girlfriend’s murder. ![]() PG-13 (for some strong language and unsettling images). Starring Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, Joel Edgerton and Tom Bateman. THIRTEEN LIVES This drama from director Ron Howard recounts the real-life story of the global effort to rescue a group of youn g boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave complex in Thailand. ![]()
